In March 2017, one of the most impressive hotels in Cape Town opened. Named The Silo, due to its home in the former grain silo elevator on Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront, the hotel takes advantage of the unique edifice.
After operations at the historic grain silo ceased in 2001, hotel company, The Royal Portfolio, saw an opportunity to develop the property into a luxury hotel. The result is 28 individually designed rooms, all of which are filled with light from the seven-metre-high convex windows. These provide views of the V&A Waterfront and Table Mountain.
Interiors are eclectic – velvet lounges, Egyptian chandeliers, bold colour schemes and custom-made artworks. Views of Cape Town are best enjoyed from the rooftop restaurant and glass-walled swimming pool. Downstairs, the hotel’s sixth floor is home to The Willaston Bar and The Granary Cafe. Here, the focus is modern French-inspired cuisine, with an extensive wine and cocktail list.
The belly of the grain silo is the home of contemporary art museum, Zeitz MOCAA. Slated to open in September 2017, the museum is South Africa’s answer to London’s Tate Modern and New York’s MoMA. Hotel guests receive direct access to The Silo’s private gallery, The Vault.
