To all the Narcos fans out there, we’ve just found your next bucket list hotel, and it’s in Pablo Escobar’s former mansion. The newly opened Casa Malca is the brainchild of New York Art Dealer, Lio Malca. After sitting abandoned for 14 years, the Mexican beachside property has been renovated into a luxury hotel, and the results are nothing short of amazing.
Interiors are bold, taking cues from Mayan culture. The entire hotel is filled with pieces of art from owner, Lio Malca’s personal collection, including prints, sculptures and furniture. All rooms have polished concrete floors and views of the beach or expansive garden. Three pools are dotted around the hotel, with one of them hidden underground.
Casa Malca’s kitchen dishes up all the usual Mexican specialties using local products and a healthy dose of avocado. Wash the ceviche or tacos pescados down with a margarita.
The hotel’s location, in the coastal town of Tulum is a more authentic portrayal of Mexico than nearby tourist hotspots, Cancun and Playa del Carmen. It’s almost like a Mexican version of Byron Bay, complete with juice bars and stores that sell dreamcatchers exclusively. The town is a must-do if you’re ever in the south of Mexico.
We’re guessing rooms at Casa Malca will book out fast, so get in early.View on trivago
