Sydney to Ulladulla: where to stop and stay on your coastal drive

Next time you head down south, why not give the freeway a miss for the scenic route? The Sutherland turn-off leads you to the Grand Pacific Drive, starting at the Royal National Park and ending in Nowra. But don’t stop there! This coastal adventure is filled with endless stunning and secluded locations that will not disappoint. Here are our highlights to make the most of your New South Wales South Coast road trip – from what to do to where to stay.

Take a kayak through the river in Audley, leap from the jump rock at Wattamolla and take a dip in the cool waters of Garie Beach. If you’re up for a challenge, take a 3.5km hike down the mountain and across headlands to reach the famous Figure 8 Pools.

Here’s a place with a splendid view! Take some pictures, grab an ice-cream, and for those who love the adrenalin rush, this is the ideal spot to give hang-gliding a go.

Cruise along the bends of the Sea Cliff Bridge, one of just seven bridges of it’s kind in the world. After all that, it’s time for a feed. You will be guaranteed a delicious pub meal at The Beaches. If you turn up on a Friday or Saturday night, chance are you’ll be around for a sweet live gig.

After your stay at the Adina Apartment Hotel. In the morning you’ll be within walking distance of Wollongong’s main beaches and the harbour, the best spot to grab breakfast and a coffee from cafes such as Diggies, Northbeach Pavilion and Pepe’s on the Beach.


Make sure you bring your snorkels, goggles and flippers along because Shellharbour’s Bushrangers Bay is among one of the ten best dive spots in New South Wales.


Continuing down south will lead you to the gorgeous village of Kiama. Head up to the lighthouse to enjoy the views of the coastline in both directions, and don’t forget to take a peek at the well-known Kiama Blowhole.


Take a small inland turn to experience a little of the South Coast countryside. Berry is a hub of local specialty food and wine. A visit to Coolangatta Estate should not be missed!

There are heaps of awesome spots in this area. Green Patch in Booderee National Park is the perfect spot for camping and hanging with cuddly kangaroos. The area is renowned for the famous Hyams Beach, which is known to have the whitest sand in the world.  After exploring the area’s natural wonders, grab a coffee, a freshly squeezed juice or a delicious lunch at Supply Café in Huskisson.


It’s time to wind down once again at the final destination. Take a stroll through the town centre or relax by the lake or on the beach. After all that, spending the night at the Ulladulla Guest House will complete the perfect road trip.
